Malibu is known for stunning architectural homes, beachfront properties, and ranches on acreage.
The median home price in Malibu is high, even by Southern California standards, but home shoppers will find a wide range of housing options, from bluff homes to more affordable condos and single-family homes. Malibu real estate has become increasingly popular over the years, with many celebrities and luxury buyers drawn to the coastal community's unparalleled lifestyle.
Most homes are close to the Pacific Coast Highway, which passes through the entire length of the city. Real estate options here range from luxurious oceanfront mansions and dramatic clifftop estates to more modest single-family homes. There are dozens of small subdivisions and enclaves with single-family homes in a wide range of prices. Even though the are is rural and remote, home buyers also have a choice of condominium complexes, most of them conveniently located near shopping centers and beaches.
Away from the coastline, roads snake through peaceful canyons. Sequestered among rolling hills and shady trees, the hillside neighborhoods of Malibu offer residents a more secluded and rural lifestyle.

About Malibu: A Coastal Paradise
Malibu sits on the western edge of the Santa Monica Mountains in Los Angeles County sharing borders with Pacific Palisades, Calabasas, and Thousand Oaks. It includes three principal areas; an amalgamation of small communities near the beach (City of Malibu) and two unincorporated areas further inland.
The City of Malibu contains subdivisions and neighborhoods closest to the ocean. Here, residents enjoy quick access to beaches, parks, and a few small commercial areas along the Pacific Coast Highway (Highway 1) with stores, restaurants, and boutiques. The two unincorporated areas of Malibu -- in L.A. County and Ventura County respectively -- are rural. Country homes in rural Malibu typically include significant acreage.
First-time visitors to Malibu quickly come to understand how rural and quiet it is. Here, you'll find miles of beautiful beaches and scenic canyons. Popular among celebrities, media tycoons, and surfers, Malibu offers the quintessential sun-drenched SoCal experience. The ever-present surf culture reminds residents to slow down and take in the surrounding nature on its own terms. Despite all the wealth and glamor on display, Malibu is, at heart, a laid-back and tight-knit community.
The community stretches 21 miles along the coast and up into the mountains. In fact, it’s pretty far (33 miles) from the hustle and bustle Downtown Los Angeles. One can expect long commute times getting in and out of the area not only from normal weekday traffic but also from weekend tourists who pack the Pacific Coast Highway.
Malibu residents are spoiled for choice regarding dining options, and many of the city's most beloved restaurants offer stunning views across the Pacific Ocean. Various options include casual, laid-back eateries serving fresh seafood to regionally renowned restaurants serving innovative, chef-driven cuisine.
Located just to the north of the PCH in the city's center, Malibu's downtown area lies adjacent to the Civic Center. This bustling, vibrant commercial zone is where you'll find dozens of fantastic restaurants, cafes, and bars, as well as shopping galore. Malibu Village shopping center offers a few boutiques as well as restaurants and services.
Nearby, Malibu Country Mart has become the city's most popular shopping destination. This upscale, outdoor shopping center's setting is simply gorgeous, with the dramatic hills providing the backdrop to fabulous ocean views. Malibu Country Mart is home to a selection of unique boutiques, galleries, and personal services, as well as plenty of dining options.
Malibu enjoys a wonderful Mediterranean climate, and residents take every opportunity to spend time outdoors. As you'd expect, locals love spending time at the beach, and there are dozens of secluded coves and uncrowded stretches of sand to explore. Known to local surfers as "the bu," the city is also home to some of the best surfing breaks in the world.
Away from the shoreline, the mountains offer a haven for hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. Popular areas include Malibu Solstice Canyon and Malibu Creek State Park, both of which feature miles of trails passing through dense forest, passing streams, waterfalls, and breathtaking vistas along the way.
